The National Honor Society promotes recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character and service. It is composed of chapters from thousands of secondary schools.
The Saint John’s Chapter was chartered in 1959.
Activities – NHS members:
- Tutor 45 minutes each week in an academic subject
- Serve as hosts and hostesses for school activities
- Help needy families at Christmas
- Conduct the winter Honors Assembly
- Sponsor the NHS Senior Award, a scholarship for a senior member
- Raise funds to support these activities
The Faculty Council is a group of five faculty members appointed annually by the principal. The NHS advisor is a non-voting sixth member. The Council selects candidates for membership and considers dismissal of members and other actions related to membership.
- The selection process begins every fall.
- Juniors and seniors are eligible for consideration. Transfer students are considered individually.
- Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Attendance and discipline records are reviewed.
- Service hours are considered. Students should have completed and documented 50 hours for juniors and 70 hours for seniors.
- A list of possible candidates is reviewed by the entire faculty, administration and staff for their input.
- The Faculty Council determines which students will be offered applications for membership.
- The Faculty Council reviews the applications and collected information and interviews each candidate to determine which students will be invited to join our chapter.
- The Induction Ceremony is held in October.
