Each summer, a group of SJCP students travels abroad for over a week to experience international travel, sightsee, and learn about other cultures. This summer our students and Dr. Mambo are traveling to Italy and Greece. While in Rome, our SJCP students visited the Spanish Steps, the 135 stairs designed by Francesco de Sanctis; Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world; and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple and since AD 609, a Catholic church; with a stop between sites for a gelato. On their second day in Rome, they visited Vatican City and toured the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, the catacombs, and the Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls, where they saw the Jubilee Door that the Pope himself opens every 25 years to celebrate the Jubilee. On their last day in Rome, they visited the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, before heading to Florence with a stop in the medieval town of Orvieto where they visited the Duomo of Orvieto and enjoyed authentic Italian pizza. Florence was magical. Everywhere they turned there was something special. The city was celebrating the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, an early form of football that originated during the Middle Ages in Italy, with a kickoff ceremony with people in medieval costume. From the Ancona harbor, the students traveled to Greece aboard the Venezia Palermo. In Greece, they visited the Meteora mountaintop monasteries, the Delphi archaeological site and museum, and in Athens, the Olympic Stadium, the Syntagma Square, and the Acropolis. In the Acropolis, they visited the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and a museum that houses ancient ruins and prehistoric artifacts. They ended their travels in Greece with an evening of music and fun, immersed in a traditional Greek-style feast with feta and fresh Mediterranean flavors. They linked arms for a night of music, dancing, and smashing plates. It was a trip they will never forget!
