Distance Learning

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Saint John’s Catholic Prep remains committed to the implementation of a robust and effective distance learning program. Several weeks of teacher and student preparation facilitated an easy transition to this new schooling platform when schools closed in mid-March. We continue to assess our distance learning policies and practices to ensure it delivers the quality of education that Saint John’s has become known for over its 180 year history.

This crisis has shown the world many things, but one of the most important is that we made the correct decision in SJCP.

Distance Learning Overview

Instruction

Saint John’s incorporates a balance of synchronous (“real time”) instruction and asynchronous (“student paced”) instruction. A variety of different video conferencing tools are used to deliver “real time” instruction at least several times a week. These live sessions follow the school bell schedule to provide students with the much-needed structure to help plan their day and manage their workload. Most assignments are delivered and submitted utilizing Google Apps for Education. Many teachers hold “after school” office hours to provide tutoring and test preparation for their students.

Student Accountability & Support

The amount and rigor of coursework is no different than when school is taking place in our actual building. The grading scale and policies, as well as our expectations for academic performance, are also the same. Attendance during “real time” instruction is required and will likely affect a student’s grade and understanding of the course material. Teachers, counselors, and the administration are in constant communication regarding students of concern (whether it be attendance or grade related). If necessary, parents will be contacted.

Our school counselors remain dedicated to providing academic, college, and emotional/social support to our students during distance learning. The process for course registration, four-year planning, and college and career exploration are being adjusted to accommodate students being at home. Our “Counseling” page, as well as our “Learning Center” page provides a wealth of information and resources for both the students and their families.

Technology

Saint John’s offers students a one-to-one computing program to enhance their learning experience. Students will primarily use these laptops (Windows-based) at home to complete their distance learning assignments. All computers are equipped with a camera and microphone to allow for live instruction via video conferencing. Saint John’s has a technology specialist who can provide daily support to students at home. All student computers come with a four-year warranty and many times a loaner computer can be provided should a student computer need to be repaired.

Professional Development and Collaboration

The entire faculty and staff “meet” on a weekly basis to discuss best distance learning practices that include virtual instructional strategies and platforms, as well as formative and summative assessment tools. The time is also used to share parent and/or student feedback about what is working well and what needs to be reviewed and adjusted. A faculty resource page has been created for the teachers to share ideas, strategies, technology platforms, and other important information with each other.
