November 2018: We Give Thanks

A Thanksgiving Prayer

"Thank you God for giving me all that I need in life. Thank you for blessing me with food, water, shelter, education, talents, friends, and family. May you please watch over all your people and creation, and thank you for this beautiful life you have given us." ~ Erika Bealmear, Class of 2019

President's Perspective

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, we give thanks for the people in our lives. This Thanksgiving I will give thanks for the great services Michael Schultz and Gwen Austin have provided to our school community. We have been so blessed because of their presence with us and the exceptional services that they have provided to our students and families.

Principal's Corner

Those who work in Catholic schools often wear many "hats". Here at SJCP, it is no different. Take Sandy Splaine, for example. She is the service coordinator, senior class moderator, Red Cross club moderator… and in her spare time teaches six math classes (one more class than the average teacher course load!).

Advancement Insight

I've had the honor of calling the Saint John's Catholic Prep school community my home for the past 14+ years. By the time you read this, my last day will have already come and gone. As I look back on my time at the school, I am so blessed to have met each and every one of you. So much has happened in my life during this time, including getting married, starting a family, and buying our first home.

Thanksgiving week is here! I really look forward to this week because there are days allotted to spending time with friends and family, getting ready for the Christmas season, AND a special day to pay it forward. Giving Tuesday, an international philanthropic day of giving, is set to take place on November 27, 2018… ONE WEEK FROM TODAY!

Campus Ministry Snippets

Today I am thankful for the gift of vulnerability. In October, the sophomore class went on its retreat to St. Peter's Catholic Church in Libertytown, MD. The retreat was named "Hello My Old Heart" for a song by the band The Oh Hellos. This song explores the idea that vulnerability is the only way to experience the full joys of friendship and love.

School Counseling

This month, the SJCP Office of School Counseling has been emphasizing the importance of stress management and recognizing the signs and symptoms of stress. Our goal has been to provide students and the extended members of our community with information on these topics.

Viking Sports Roundup

In this thankful season, it is only appropriate to thank our Fall Sports student-athletes.

Let's thank our Cheerleaders first, because they spend all of their time 'thanking' - i.e., cheering for their classmates on the field and on the court.

Alumni Spotlight

When Jake Filyo graduated from Saint John's Catholic Prep in 2012, he probably never dreamed, in a mere six years, he would be walking in the Washington Capitals' championship parade and sporting a Stanley Cup championship ring, but that is exactly what has happened.

Thank you to our students, faculty, and staff who were on campus to share with our visitors all the exciting things happening at SJCP. Our guests were very impressed with the warm welcome they received as well as our school spirit.

SJCP Offers Introduction to Organic Chemistry

Mention organic chemistry to the doctors, nurses, dentists, and veterinarians in your life and you will understand the reputation the subject has of being a notoriously difficult course. Saint John's is offering an introductory organic chemistry course for the first time in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Sophomore Retreat

Ms. Quinn and the campus ministry team's planning all came together for a wonderful experience for the students at their Sophomore Retreat. The retreat's theme was "Hello My Old Heart." The focus was on breaking down the walls we put up around ourselves both around other people and in front of God. By delving into this theme, we came to experience the joys of vulnerability within authentic friendships.
