Back to School 2018: A New Year Celebration

President's Perspective

We officially began our 189th academic year, with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, celebrated by Fr. Larry Frasier. Fr. Larry, who recently retired as the Pastor of St. Joseph-on-Carrollton Manor will serve with Fr. Mike Kuhn as our campus Chaplain. We are fortunate to have 2 priests who will be with us 3 days a week.

Principal's Corner

There is always a lot of "new" when it comes to a new school year. New teachers. New students. New courses. New opportunities. New challenges. For some schools, like with Saint John's Catholic Prep, there is also some new leadership.

Advancement Insight

The 2018-2019 school year has arrived! After a successful week of orientations, meetings, and training, classes are now underway and the excitement is building for another great school year at Saint John's Catholic Prep!

We opened the new school year by welcoming our returning students, the Class of 2022, and 17 transfer students.

Development Update

Welcome Back! I hope you all had a great summer and a nice start to the school year.

Over the summer one of my main priorities was to design, complete, and mail out the Honor Roll of Donors. The Honor Roll of Donors acknowledges the benefactors who made a gift to SJCP between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Campus Ministry Snippets

Over the summer, I wrote a prayer for the school called "Steer Our Hearts." This prayer invites the Holy Spirit to steer our hearts towards our school's five pillars: Faith, Leadership, Scholarship, Honor, and Service. Reflecting on that prayer two months after writing it, I can see the Holy Spirit has answered my request!

School Counseling

As our students embark on a new year of learning and activities, it is important to remember that high schoolers may feel overwhelmed with more freedom and responsibilities. Incorporating healthy habits and planning into daily routines can alleviate the demands of academic and social pressures.

Tech Notes

Our 1:1 program took another step forward this year by upgrading our student laptops to the best we have had so far!

Viking Sports Roundup

The fall brings us a few new starts in our Athletic Department. Specifically, the reins of the Boys' Soccer program are now in the capable hands of Mr. Wil Ricketts. Wil, a 10-year coaching veteran comes to Saint John's with extensive experience on the State and National level.

Alumni Spotlight

When Saint John's Catholic Prep put out the call for donations for our Annual Soiree, we were thrilled to hear from a couple of our alumni who were willing to donate their wonderful beach house in Riviera Maya, Mexico.  Mary Ellen Hiteshew and Gene "Buzz" Langan graduated from Saint John's in the Class of 1962 and have been married to one another for 52 years!

First Day of MSMU Classes for Our Students

September 4, 2018 was not only the start of school at Saint John's Catholic Prep but the first day of Mount St. Mary's University class for our SJCP students. Twenty-five students are enrolled in Introduction to Criminal Justice this fall and an English course in the spring. They had a great first day and we are very thankful for this partnership!

First Day of the 2018-2019 School Year

The first day of school is always exciting at SJCP! For some of our students, it is their first day of high school! For others, it is their LAST first day! We love having everyone together again and can't wait to see all of our students' accomplishments this year!

Students Get Jump Start on Their College Essays

SJCP Class of 2019 students got a jump start of their college essays this summer by attending Mr. Petersen's "College Essay Workshop" at Mount St. Mary's Frederick Campus on August 23, August 28, and August 30. Mr. Petersen worked with them to develop topics for the essay and set up workshops to write the essays, to make sure they are ready to go when it is time to submit them with their applications. Thank you to senior Anna Keys for submitting the photos!

Faculty and Staff Attend Retreat at the Grotto

Members of the SJCP faculty and staff attended a retreat at the Mount St. Mary's Grotto on August 30, 2018. Following the theme "The Still, Small Voice", our Director of Campus Ministry, Kate Quinn, created a schedule that would help everyone reclaim silence and peace as the source of our work throughout the school year.

Upperclassmen Return for Orientation

SJCP sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended orientation on August 29, 2018. The returning students walked through their individual schedules, met with their teachers, and are ready for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

Freshman Attend Orientation and Retreat

SJCP welcomed the Class of 2022 to freshman orientation on August 28, 2018. The students met with Mr. Knotek, Mr. Hayes, Mrs. Anders, Mrs. Hoehn, and Mrs. Petrie and then with the help of their student ambassador, they walked through their individual schedules, met their teachers, and learn a little bit more about what to expect for the first day of school. After the freshmen orientation, our campus ministry took over and had a great time with the freshmen retreat.

New Parents are Welcomed to Orientation

SJCP students welcomed parents on campus to New Parent Orientation on the evening of August 27, 2018. The parents were welcomed with an opening prayer from President, Dr. Powell and learned about the exciting year ahead from Principal, Will Knotek, and Assistant Principals Jill Seaman and Daryl Hayes.

Student Ambassador Leadership Program

Our Student Ambassadors for the 2018-2019 school year were on campus August 27, for their leadership program. The Student Ambassadors serve as peer advisors to incoming students, both freshmen and transfer students. Each new student is assigned a Student Ambassador, who will assist the new student with the transition into high school and life at Saint John's. They are ready to welcome the new students!

Campus Ministry Team Attends Retreat

On August 23, our Campus Ministry Team of students gathered with our new Director of Campus Ministry, Ms. Kate Quinn, to prepare for the upcoming year. The group came together for mass, played games, discussed SJCP Campus Ministry and what each student hopes to accomplish by being a member of this team, discussed their individual role in prayer, and more. The campus ministry team is ready to help welcome our new freshmen class and work as a team in the coming school year!
