February 2018

President's Perspective

This past month we opened our new Delaplaine Rocca Team Center. This new addition to the school has a vastly improved fitness facility for our student-athletes and the general campus community. The team center also has boys' and girls' locker rooms to accommodate our teams and visiting teams during competitions. In the spring we will have a special dedication ceremony and honor the generosity of Mr. George Delaplaine and Mr. & Mrs. Leo Rocca.

Principal's Corner

As a Catholic community, Saint John's recognizes Lent as one of the most important times of the school year. Even though it is generally a solemn time during the liturgical year, we try to remind our students how valuable the Lenten season is because it gives us pause to reflect on our shortcomings and flaws.

Advancement Insight

School has now been back in session for over a month since the Christmas break although, with all of the delays and cancellations, it's been hard to get back into a routine. After a mild winter last year, I guess payback was to be expected and according to Punxsutawney Phil, who did see his shadow earlier this month, winter won't be ending anytime soon.

Tech Notes

The Learning Commons was formed from the combined services of the Library and Information Technology areas almost two years ago, with the intent to offer enhanced services to a rapidly growing need of our faculty and students.

Ms. Melissa Minsker leads the Learning Commons with the support of Mr. Mitchell Kelman, our technology specialist.

Chaplain's Chat

About twenty years ago while I was stationed in the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, we traveled to Washington DC for the March for Life. Our first day we had a shock absorber blow up while we were making a turn onto Powhatan Road in Falls Church, Virginia. Three days later we are heading back to Fall River, Massachusetts on a bus; I was wiping the inside of the windshield most of the trip so the bus driver could see to drive on the highway.

Parents' Council

A small group of Parents' Council members met on Tuesday, February 13 to receive updates on school-related issues.  Dr. Powell updated the members on the following subjects:

School Counseling

Our school counselors are beginning the process of meeting with all freshman, sophomores, and juniors to review four-year academic plans and discuss courses for the 2018-2019 academic year. The plans will be kept in the counseling office and returned to students at the time of registration.

Viking Sports Roundup

Both our Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams remain in playoff contention. The boys continue to press for a position in the playoffs, while our girls begin their playoff journey. The girls' championship game is Sunday, February 18 and hopefully, we will be there.
