November 2017

President's Perspective

This past month I was in China for an extended stay. The first part of my trip was to further investigate a wonderful opportunity for Saint John's Catholic Prep. A private educational group in China has asked us to assist them with the establishment of their first American-based international high school. They are asking us to train the principal and teachers in American high school education.

Principal's Corner

With the recent fall colors and the noticeable change in weather, we look ahead to the last month and a half of 2017 and the coming Advent season.  When I think about these seasonal changes, I am reminded of Henry David Thoreau's quote from his famous work Walden:  "Things do not change; we change."

Advancement Insight

Like many, the fall and holiday season is always a time I very much look forward to each year. It's a time that always seems so far away yet continues to find a way to sneak up on me. After spending the better part of October on the road visiting partner schools and participating in school fairs, it's nice to be back on campus to prepare for applications and the coming together of our next freshman class.

Chaplain's Chat

I heard this story a while back and thought the family of Saint John's Catholic Prep might enjoy the story of Squanto. I borrowed this article from Dale Ahlquist.

In 1614, he had been captured by an English party led by Captain John Smith (of Pocahontas fame) and taken on a ship to Spain where he was to be sold as a slave.

School Counseling

Many of us practice special traditions during this time of Thanksgiving. Some may make efforts to be more giving and generous throughout the month of November. Often families share things around the dinner table for which they are grateful. Did you know that research demonstrates that a thankful attitude is linked to both physical and mental health benefits?*

Viking Sports Roundup

By all measures, we had an exceptional year in our Fall Sports program here at Catholic Prep. Along with many individual and team accomplishments, all of the teams showed improvement from years' past and in their skill in play. It is always interesting to see how some teams start "slow", while others start "fast", and then others stay "steady".

SJCP's Day of Giving

We are only 13 days away from SJCP's Day of Giving! This will take place on Giving Tuesday, a 24-hour virtual event that calls all SJCP alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, grandparents and friends to make an online donation to SJCP and spread the word about the day via social media. Last year this community was able to come together and EXCEED our goal bringing in over $12,000. This year I am challenging everyone to help me raise $15,000 in 24 hours for our students! Please mark your calendar, save the date for November 28, and make a gift to SJCP. Your gift, no matter what size, will make a difference for our students!

Students Maintain Campus Flower Beds

Fall is a perfect time for flower bed clean up and the AP Environmental Science class was doing just that. They removed the marigolds and sunflowers, which were grown in the garden bed by the entrance of the school. Another garden bed was dug along the exit driveway and over 400 daffodil bulbs were planted in these beds.

"Vikings After Hours" a Student Run Business

Vikings After Hours is now OPEN! Snacks are available from our student-run business after school from 3:00-4:30 in the Great Hall. Not only is this an opportunity for the students to purchase snacks after school, but this is a great way for them to learn about running a business. With oversight from Mrs. Foss, the students are responsible for running Vikings After Hours.

Halloween at Saint John's

Students, Faculty, and Staff dress up for Halloween. Happy Halloween from all of us at Saint John's Catholic Prep.

Students Visit Pittsburgh

SJCP students traveled to Pittsburgh to see the city, explore a museum and visit colleges. A group of juniors and seniors toured Duquesne University and participated in a workshop hosted by The Center for Student Involvement, while our digital photography class took a walking tour to capture the city in photos.

Student Guests at Rotary Club of Frederick

The Rotary Club of Frederick has been inviting student guests to join them for lunch for many years. It is a tradition that brings great pleasure to the Rotarians and one that has been of value to several generations of SJCP students. The students are sponsored by Mr. Eric Dummann, member of the Rotary Club of Frederick.

Second Book Buddies Visit to SJRCS

Eight SJCP juniors traveled to St. John Regional Catholic School for our second visit for our Book Buddies Program. This time our students visited the Pre K4 classes. The theme was "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie." After talking to the kids about reading at home and what their favorite books are, our students read to them and helped them make mouse ears.

Saint John's Donates to Hurricane Relief

On October 20, Saint John's sophomores went on their annual retreat and explored the theme of this school year, the Heroic Minute. Discussions included how students can decide how to make it through tough times or difficult decisions; how not to be apathetic, and how to positively act when needed. Specifically, students were asked to identify what makes different men and women heroes.

2nd Annual Hop, Run or Walk

Saint John's held the 2nd Annual Hop, Run, or Walk to benefit the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund on October 21, 2017, at Stillpoint Farm - Milkhouse Brewery. There were 75 runners/walkers and another 50 spectators. This day would not have been possible without the generosity of community partners and our volunteers.

Alumni Spotlight

Several years ago, after the passing of a schoolmate, Rick Stup, Class of 1965, gathered a group of former classmates together and began the tradition of having a bi-monthly luncheon, which continues to this day. Rick volunteered to be the liaison for the class of '65 and has been instrumental in planning reunions every 5 years and keeping Saint John's updated on classmates.
