October 2017

President's Perspective

On Sunday, October 15th, Dr. Powell left for another historic trip to China to visit with educational colleagues and explore additional partnerships in education. Catholic Prep is proud of all of our Chinese students, including those working with Azure Education, and their contribution to the school, in spirit and in internationalism. In this global world that we live, which is becoming smaller and smaller to all of us, educating our students on the many merits of diversity and different cultures brings a unique aspect to our school.

Principal's Corner

The community of Saint John's Catholic Prep never ceases to amaze me with its generosity and charitable giving. Only in school for six weeks, the students, families, and staff at SJCP have stepped up to assist with multiple fundraisers: a school supply drive for patrons of Frederick Rescue Mission, a hurricane Harvey relief drive started by junior Lily Ehart, a Pennies for Patients fund for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and a fundraiser for junior Trevor Hickman, who is recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

Advancement Insight

The cool evenings serve as a reminder that fall is slowly making its way into our area and with that all of the fun and excitement that comes as the holiday season approaches.

In the Advancement Office, we have started making our visits to partner schools and preparations are underway for our annual Fall Open House on Sunday, November 5th from 1-3 PM.

Tech Notes

It's always a pleasure to welcome new and returning students back to school in the fall.

We've been busy preparing technology for the new International Language Center complex, outfitting it with systems common to all other classrooms. We're looking forward to seeing students there soon!

Chaplain's Chat

As I began thinking about my article for this month's Viking Voice, I was hoping to write something that would help us understand the importance of the month of October, "Respect Life Month." I then found this article written by the Cardinal in New York. This article caught my attention when I read that "Be not Afraid" is the Respect Life Theme for 2017-2018. Most of the time when I see or hear the phrase "Be Not Afraid," I am reminded the many times Pope Saint John Paul the Great used the phrase.

Parents' Council

The Parents' Council met on Tuesday, October 10th for the first time this new school year. The purpose of the council is to update the school community about behind the scenes activities that are being done to enhance the school and the learning experience, and in turn, to hear from the families about what is working and what is not.

School Counseling

The counseling office at Saint John's Catholic Prep would like to welcome Mrs. Julie Hoehn, our replacement for Kristi Hallman, who is now working with Catholic Charities. Mrs. Hoehn is currently in school three days each week. Paulette Anders and Diana Seymour continue to be in the office daily.

Viking Sports Roundup

As we are now into the beautiful months of Autumn, our fall sports programs are in full swing. Soccer, Cross Country, Football, and Volleyball are all in the midst of conference games. All remain competitive and in the mix for postseason play. We wish them the best!

37th Annual Soiree

The theme has officially been revealed, our first committee meeting has taken place, and now we are full speed ahead on planning our largest fundraiser of the year!

The National Honor Society promotes recognition of students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The Saint John's chapter of the NHS has been active for 58 years and has the longstanding tradition of inducting students who not only prove academic achievement and demonstrate service to the community, but exhibit a willingness to use their talents and skills to help others.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

October 4, 2017 was the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and our international students shared with us the tradition of the Moon Festival. This is the time of the year the moon is at its brightest and this is considered one of the most important holidays in the Chinese culture. A traditional meal during the festival includes mooncakes, which all of our students had the opportunity to try!

President's Reception Recognizes Donors

The weather couldn't have been more beautiful for the President's Reception held on the patio on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Under a crisp blue sky, Saint John's honored the major donors from the 2016-2017 fiscal year and current board members who contributed to a successful year of growth and development at the school.

Our students visited the PreK 3 classes and read "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" and did crafts with our new friends! These eight students are all graduates of SJRCS and were happy to be back!

Senior Class McElroy Day of Service

On the autumn equinox, September 22, the Senior Class participated in this year's first McElroy Day Of Service.

Arriving mid-day at the Seed of Life fields at Hargett Farm, our 80 seniors harvested by hand over 22 cases of peppers and 28 cases of tomatoes.

Saint John's Donates to Hurricane Relief

Thank you to all the students and staff who brought in $5 for Friday's dress down day to benefit hurricane victims in Houston. Along with the efforts of Lily Ehart and her bake sale, we raised $2,000 for this worthy cause.

Harvesting and Processing Hops

Students in Mr. Brian Nogay's AP Environmental Science class harvested hops grown in our Hop Yard and then traveled to Vanish Brewery to learn the science behind processing hops. The rhizomes were planted in May and cared for by our AP Environmental Science and AP Biology classes. Throughout this growing process, students have had the opportunity to learn hands-on about diseases that affect crop life, soil science, and plant propagation.

Alumni Spotlight

When Margaret Thomas Koogle graduated from Saint John's in 1980, she wasn't the first in her family to do so. Margaret followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, Virginia Brosius, who graduated 50 years earlier, in 1930.

Margaret was a member of the National Honor Society, Cheerleading, Pep Club, and Yearbook. She especially enjoyed Philosophy and Epochs in History with Thomas Farrell, Science classes with Barbara van der Schalie, Math classes, the school trip to Europe and cheerleading. Margaret has stayed connected to her classmates and has visited the Saint John's Buckeystown campus.
