Mary Ellen & Gene Langan - Class of 1962

When Saint John’s Catholic Prep put out the call for donations for our Annual Soiree, we were thrilled to hear from a couple of our alumni who were willing to donate their wonderful beach house in Riviera Maya, Mexico.  Mary Ellen Hiteshew and Gene “Buzz” Langan graduated from Saint John’s in the Class of 1962 and have been married to one another for 52 years!  The couple currently lives in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

Casa Langan was a hot item in our live auction this year and their generosity helped to raise over $111,000 for the school at our “Jewels in the Jungle” Soiree.

Mary Ellen was born in Boston, MA, but moved to Frederick at age three.  She attended Saint John’s from the first grade through twelfth-grade graduation and had many of the same classmates throughout those years.

While at Saint John’s, Mary Ellen participated in basketball and choir.  Her favorite memories include the friendships she made, Fr. Jordan’s English and Latin classes, a Toga party at the swimming pool at Prospect Hall, as well as summer afternoons around that pool.

The diploma from Saint John’s was just the beginning of Mary Ellen’s academic achievement. She received her BS in Social Work from George Mason University, an MS in Gerontology from George Washington University and she achieved her Doctorate from George Washington University in Counselor Education.

She spent her career as a College Professor at George Washington University, Wilmington University and Trinity University where she retired in 2007.  In retirement, Mary Ellen is Chair of the Environmental Committee in Fenwick Island, DE.  Her hobbies include traveling, boating, and her grandchildren.

Gene “Buzz” Langan was born in Scranton, PA and moved to Frederick as a sophomore in high school.  While at Saint John’s, Buzz was very active and took on many leadership roles.  He played basketball and baseball, was Class President his Junior and Senior years, was a member of the National Honor Society and was an altar boy. At his graduation in 1962, Buzz was awarded Outstanding Scholar-Athlete.  Buzz’s favorite memories from his time at Saint John’s are his great classmates and Fr. Jordan’s English class.

Like Mary Ellen, Buzz went on to great academic success with a BS in Economics from Villanova University in 1966 and then graduated from the University of Scranton with an MBA in 1968.

Buzz went on to co-found two companies in the healthcare industry and he built healthcare facilities throughout the United States.  He is now “retired” but has been serving on the Fenwick Island Town Council for 9 years and is currently the Mayor of Fenwick Island, Delaware.  Like his wife, Buzz enjoys traveling, boating and his six grandchildren.

The couple raised three children: their oldest son lives in Northern Virginia and is married with two children, the next son lives in Vermont and is married with three children, and their daughter lives in DC and has one child.

Buzz and Mary Ellen stay connected to former classmates through Facebook but have not had the opportunity to return to visit the new campus yet.

We appreciate Buzz and Mary Ellen Langan sharing their story with us and we invite them, and all our alumni, to come visit the Buckeystown campus of Saint John’s, for it is on the shoulders of our alumni that we continue to grow.

If you would like to share your story since graduation, please contact Michele Rogers at mrogers@saintjohnsprep.org.
