The fall brings us a few new starts in our Athletic Department. Specifically, the reins of the Boys’ Soccer program are now in the capable hands of Mr. Wil Ricketts. Wil, a 10-year coaching veteran comes to Saint John's with extensive experience on the State and National level. Wil’s hire as our Head Boys’ JV Coach is Andy Tabaa. Coach Ricketts, incumbent assistant Mitch Kelman, and Coach Tabaa will build a culture of developing and winning soccer for the Vikings.
Other than our competitive ‘B’ Conference Volleyball Team, the Vikings’ other Fall Sports have been battling Mother Nature this fall. Football, for example, though scheduled for 2 games thus far, has been able to play just 4 minutes of one game and one half of another; Mother Nature 2, Saint John’s Catholic Prep 0. AND, our Cheerleaders have borne the brunt of Football’s battle with the elements, as they have but two soggy evenings in the books to show for the early going. Hang in there, Ladies! Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer have also had cancellations for wet weather and heat. Cross Country’s intrepid group just had their big Oatlands Invitational canceled because, to quote Coach Beth Ann McRoberts, the “streams our runners usually run through are now rivers”; Hurricane Florence 1, Saint John’s Catholic Prep 0.
BUT, fall is coming and, while our starts have been abbreviated, the TEACHING and CARING going on out on our fields is gratifying to see. Our ‘dry ones’, Volleyball, had a huge 3 set victory over league foe Mercy recently and head into conference play in earnest as the calendar turns.
Our students are now free to attend any and all home games and their support for one another is visibly lifting teams efforts on gameday.
ALL please come join us at McCurdy Field, in our Viking Gymnasium, and on our fields out back. You’ll enjoy every second.Peter Strickland Director of Athletics
