Tech Notes - February 2018

The Learning Commons was formed from the combined services of the Library and Information Technology areas almost two years ago, with the intent to offer enhanced services to a rapidly growing need of our faculty and students.

Ms. Melissa Minsker leads the Learning Commons with the support of Mr. Mitchell Kelman, our technology specialist.

Besides our own catalog of books and journals, Ms. Minsker has been instrumental in enhancing access to the rich resources of the Frederick County Public Library system for students and faculty, ensuring that all students have a library card. And, with technology support readily available right in the Commons, hardware and software issues are quickly resolved.

The Learning Commons also showcases new technology, such as 3D printing. “The Intro to 3D Printing class began this semester and already students in the class--as well as interested students who frequent the Learning Common--are designing files for the printers”, says Ms. Minsker. "The ultimate goal of the 3D Printing course is to help students understand the basics of 3 Dimensional Design and how best to create tangible objects.  Later this spring, the students in the class will partner with Mrs. Miller’s Interior Design students to create a project together (inspired by a planned field trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater).” See this exciting new technology in action: 3D Printing Class Offered at Catholic Prep.

The Learning Commons is open from 7:30 am until 6 pm for the convenience of our students, parents, and faculty.
