 School Counseling - Back to School 2018

As our students embark on a new year of learning and activities, it is important to remember that high schoolers may feel overwhelmed with more freedom and responsibilities. Incorporating healthy habits and planning daily routines can alleviate the demands of academic and social pressures. We can assist our teens to create a smooth transition by helping them negotiate new experiences and build self-reliance in the process.

Map out schedules

Using a calendar or agenda to visualize appointments, deadlines, responsibilities, and events will aid not only in organization but will help to establish positive habits and routines. Set aside time for homework and downtime daily. Continue to make sure agendas are updated.

Establish healthy habits

The recommended amount of sleep, even for teens, is 8-10 hours each day. Shutting down screen time at least one hour before bed and keeping such devices out of your child’s room will contribute to a more restful slumber. In addition to a good night’s sleep, it is important that teens eat healthful foods and snacks throughout their demanding days. 

Get involved

SJCP offers many opportunities for involvement including clubs, community service, and athletics. Participation not only develops strong self-esteem and social skills, it demonstrates to colleges the interests and well-roundedness of applicants. It is important for students to challenge themselves outside of the classroom as well as academically.

Know your teachers

Students should take time to talk with their teachers before or after classes to develop a good rapport. Teachers can be helpful in setting academic goals and helping students achieve them. If students begin to struggle or have questions, they can ask for help before falling behind. SJCP faculty is available to students most days until 3:45 pm.

Set goals

By being proactive and incorporating daily healthy habits, teens can begin to set goals for this academic year and beyond. Our counseling office is here to support our students as they prepare for college. We check in with students periodically to ensure that they are on the right track to college and we offer support academically, socially and emotionally.
