AP English Language & Composition Students Learn about the 1970 Draft

Mrs. Edginton’s AP Language & Composition class reenacted the 1970 random selection sequence draft after reading "The Things They Carried" by Tim O’Brien. “Congressman” Knotek read the birthdates out loud, and reactions varied. Some students stormed out of the room and others accepted their fate more calmly. In 1970, men turning 20 would be drafted first by the Selective Service System (the agency of the government that runs the draft) and women were not drafted. The last draft in the United States was in June of 1973, more than 30 years before most of these students were born. And while the current United States military has been all-volunteer since 1973, an act of Congress can reinstate the draft in the case of a national emergency.
