The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful for the President’s Reception held on the patio on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Under a crisp blue sky, Saint John’s honored the major donors from the 2016-2017 fiscal year and current board members who contributed to a successful year of growth and development at the school.
The attendees enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while taking time to catch up with one another and celebrate the school. Dr. Powell reminded us of the rich history of Saint John’s and its founder, Fr. John McElroy, an Irish immigrant who, after founding Saint John’s, went on to found Boston College.
In attendance for this event were Mr. Leo Rocca and Mr. George Delaplaine, whose generosity has allowed us to build the new Delaplaine Rocca Team Center. The construction is underway and some attendees visited the construction area to see the progress. Mr. Rocca and Mr. Delaplaine are long-time supporters of the school and spoke briefly about their support of the school and the necessity of Catholic education and, more specifically, Saint John’s – the only Catholic high school in Frederick County.
In recognition of our relationship with Mount St. Mary’s, the new President, Dr. Tim Trainor, also joined the celebration. With his impressive military experience as a Brigadier General and dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy, we are thrilled to be working with Dr. Trainer and Mount St. Mary's in offering college-level courses to our students.
Saint John’s has developed a relationship with Columbia Bank, and we were happy to have Mr. Anil Pereira, Vice President of Commercial Banking, in attendance. Mr. Pereira has been quite helpful in making the new loan process go smoothly. He is also a former college and Arena League football kicker and has been helping to coach the Vikings football team.
We were happy to see several of our hardworking board members including Pat Crowley, Bill Ballantyne, Pam Zusi, Kate Costlow, Michael O’Connor and Liz Kinley. The President’s Reception is Saint John’s opportunity to publicly thank our board for all they do. These people donate both time and treasure to the school for which we are eternally grateful.
Although this event happens only once a year, we remember and thank our donors every day for all they do to make Saint John’s an institution our founder, Fr. John McElroy would be proud of.
