On Friday, September 29, 2017, the SJCP community gathered for our bi-annual Honors Assembly. This celebration recognized the academic accomplishments of students from the second semester of the 2016-2017 school year.
We honored our students who achieved Honors with Distinction and President’s List. We recognized Kate Goundry, Blue Shapiro, Lexi Stewart, Mimi Pessagno, and Curtis Nishimoto for holding the highest GPA’s in their classes. Curtis also held the highest GPA in the school for the spring 2017 semester.
The Pillar Awards were created in an effort to recognize those students who excel not only academically, but in other valuable ways that support our school's mission. The following students were presented with a Pillar Award:
Faith: Lily Ehart
Leadership: Patrick Bulley
Scholarship: Anna Karpowicz
Honor: Thomas Nishimoto
Service: Seth McRoberts
For the first time, SJCP also recognized a faculty member who exemplifies our pillars. Mr. Tim Van Schaick was given the Pillar Award for Scholarship. Mr. Van has been with SJCP for 10 years and we are very fortunate to have him working with our students.
Special awards recognized:
The Washington College Leadership and Community Service Award: Kristen Buyalos
The Washington College Environmental Stewardship Award: Elizabeth Gillis
The Elmira College Key Award: Gloria Crider.
Chatham University’s Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award: Rachel Hughes

Commended Student for the National Merit Scholarhship: In the Fall of 2016, 1.6 million high school juniors took the PSAT. The PSAT also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Just 2% of these juniors received Letters of Commendation for their outstanding PSAT performance and academic promise. Here at Saint John’s Catholic Prep we four of these very select students in our senior class: Teagan McCarthy, Curtis Nishimoto, Thomas Nishimoto, and Robert Velte
Congratulations to ALL of the students recognized today! We are very proud of how hard you worked during the second semester.
