Students in Mr. Brian Nogay’s AP Environmental Science class harvested hops grown in our Hop Yard and then traveled to Vanish Brewery to learn the science behind processing hops. The rhizomes were planted in May and cared for by our AP Environmental Science and AP Biology classes. Throughout this growing process, students have had the opportunity to learn hands-on about diseases that affect crop life, soil science, and plant propagation. The ultimate goal is to assist Flying Dog in brewing a special beer that will be served at their tasting room in Buckeystown, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the nonprofit organization, Seed of Life. Founded in 2010, Seed of Life is an important partner with other organizations like Maryland Food Bank, in helping the food insecure in Frederick County. Farmer Mike Dickson, founder of Seed of Life, grows produce in a variety of locations to supplement supplies donated to the needy. Thank you to the staff at Vanish for taking the time to teach our students!
