Our New Campus
Saint John’s Catholic Prep will be moving to a new state-of-the-art campus soon. Located on a 49 acre site on Rt. 85 in Buckeystown, Maryland, the site will allow us to build a campus to meet the academic, performing arts, and athletic needs of our students. To maintain the small class sizes and excellent student to faculty ratio, the school will be built for a student population of 500. The new, forward-thinking and technology-enriched academic campus will incorporate the needed changes for today’s students and students for the next 100 years.
Our Catholic tradition will continue to play a central role in shaping our education mission of developing and educating the total student – mind, body, and spirit. With its rich history, Saint John’s Catholic Prep is an extraordinary combination of talented educators and an administration committed to fostering faith and inspiring excellence for its young men and women.
These are exciting times for the Saint John’s community and we welcome you to join us in being a part of this historical event.
The wings of the academic building will house four learning centers: 1) Humanities, 2) Social Studies, 3) Visual and Performing Arts, and 4) Sciences, Mathematics and Technology. This design fosters a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching. For example, our history teachers can cover European history while our English and religious professors are able to teach subjects in the same time period so that students understand the linkages across disciplines and experience learning in a more exciting, rewarding, and interactive way.
Faculty offices are clustered within the four learning centers to further enable faculty to interact and support student needs.
The chapel is designed to anchor the entrance of the main building and is situated as the initial visual greeting when students, parents and visitors enter the school. It will accommodate small groups. However the outside courtyard, as well as the gymnasium, can easily accommodate up to 800 people for Baccalaureate Mass and other school liturgies.
A black box theater, music rooms, and art, ceramics, and graphics studios will allow us to develop a Visual and Performing Arts program for the first time that will enrich the student learning experience.
Technology will infuse the entire academic building. The facility will be wireless and allow the use of laptops throughout. The upgrade will make for more efficient communication between students and teachers.
Two stadiums, one indoor and one outdoor, will make it possible for Saint John’s to host athletic events on site for the first time in our history. A 1,000 seat football, soccer, track, and lacrosse stadium as well as a softball field, baseball field, tennis courts, and practice fields will be built. In addition, a 1,000 seat athletic and convocation facility will also serve as an activities center.
Benefits to Teachers and Students
The academic building is designed to promote a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching - faculty within certain disciplines will be able to work with faculty in complementary disciplines – providing students with a deeper, enriching, and seamless approach to learningOur students will have access to state-of-the-art technology. There will be notebooks for use in all the classrooms and projection systems in the classrooms as well. The campus will be wireless with all new computers. Also, we will have space to schedule more student functions on campus so that we can hold events on Friday and Saturday evenings.
