Elmira College: Elmira, New York
Elmira College claims they are in the finger lake region of New York, but a close look at Elmira puts it a bit closer to the Pennsylvania border then one would think. Mark Twain wrote his masterpieces in Elmira, now a city of 35,000. All 1200 students live on campus for all 4 years.
Elmira College finished in the top ten of its category of USNews & Report’s “America’s Best College” for the past 11 years. Money Magazine has named Elmira College as one of the Top Ten Colleges in the Nation for Academic Scholarships! In fact, if you visit between September and January 31st of your senior year of high school – you automatically get a $10,000 scholarship spread over 4 years!
Elmira’s students take two 12-week semesters. In April/May they engage in a 6-week mini-mester. This is an opportunity for students to do an internship; take extraordinary courses like The Golden Age of Television or Investing Your Money; or travel with a professor overseas to Paris, London, Spain, Italy or even the Bahamas! To further students’ well-roundedness, in freshmen and sophomore years they receive credit for attending theatre, music and dance.
Elmira competes at the NCAA Division III level. It has a strong lacrosse team and its cheerleading squad was National Champions in 2007. The college also fields a Division III Ice Hockey team!
Some of the unique and/or most popular majors at Elmira are: Speech & Hearing, Nursing, Education, Speech and Language Disabilities, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Studies, and an Athletic Coaching Certificate. The college hosts in conjunction with Cornell University an Army and Air Force ROTC.
