We consider all factors when working with the student as he/she explores college opportunities. Our goal is for each graduate to attend a college that matches his/her needs, as well as the family’s needs. At this time, we have 100% applicant acceptance to college. The Class of 2011 had an average SAT of 1078 (1600 scale), 1594 (2400) and was offered over $3.5 million in college scholarships and grants.
The Counselors work closely with students in determining college choice, considering their academic, financial, and social needs. The Counselors also provide the students and parents with many resources, and serve as the liaison to college admission officers as well.
Formal introduction to the college search, selection and application process begins in the spring of the junior year. Students and parents meet individually with the Counselors to develop a personal plan for securing acceptable college placements. These sessions include a review of the student's academic history and interpretation of test scores.
College Counseling Goals
- To educate the Saint John’s community, including parents, faculty, staff, and administration, about the college counseling process and what colleges look for in a student.
- To counsel students and help them find schools that are a good ‘fit’ or match.
- To ensure that our students present themselves well to colleges.
- To organize and provide information to colleges, including transcripts and letters of recommendation.
- To stay informed on trends into the college admission process by attending conferences and visiting colleges.
- To continue to augment Saint John’s reputation by organizing workshops, participating in professional organizations such as NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) and PCACAC (Potomac & Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling), and networking with college admission professionals.
