| SJCP RECEIVES FIRST ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR LEGACY CAMPAIGN Saint John’s Catholic Prep is very pleased to announce the Horning Brothers Scholarship for African American Students. This is the first scholarship received for the Legacy Campaign’s Endowed Scholarship Fund. The corpus of the $50,000 scholarship will have the ability to grow until 2014, when the first awards will be available for distribution. Scholarships like the Horning Brothers Scholarship are consistent with the mission of Saint John’s, as well as a wonderful addition to the school’s scholarship funds made available to an important student constituency. Horning Brothers is a real estate development firm located in Washington, D.C. Mr. Joseph Horning, Chairman of Horning Brothers, has served in an advisory capacity to numerous public, private, and parochial educational institutions and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Mount St. Mary’s College. Dr. Jack Campbell, President at Saint John’s, states, “endowed scholarships are a way of assuring future generations of students that a SJCP education will be a realistic possibility. We are most grateful to The Horning Brothers for their generosity and outreach to our African American students.” Saint John’s is currently conducting The Legacy Campaign to raise $7 million dollars. Six million is being used toward the new school building and $1 million is earmarked for an endowment fund. To date, The Legacy Campaign has raised $2,323,906 in gifts and pledges. Additional contributions to campaign for both the building fund and endowed funds are welcome and greatly appreciated. For additional information, please contact Diane Favret, Executive Director for Institutional Advancement at Saint John’s Catholic Prep. |

| AN ARTISIT MAKES HER MARK Junior Kathy Morrill has been selected as one of 30 finalists in the Fifth Annual Lucerne® The Art of Dairy™ Art Contest. This national competition calls for secondary school students to design a cow using a specific theme each year. This year's theme is "The Taste of Moo-sic" and Kathy did an outstanding job creating a scene filled with cows enjoying dairy beverages and snacks in a jazz café. As a finalist, Lucerne will be sending a 5'x 8' fiberglass cow sculpture to Saint John's for Kathy to paint her design. The cow will then be displayed at our local Safeway grocery store and eventually will come back to Saint John's to be permanently displayed. The grand prize will be awarded after April 1. | MARKING THE PASSAGE TO UPPERCLASSMEN On Thursday, February 18, after several postponements from the snow, the junior class of Saint John’s gathered in the McSherry Gymnasium to share in the tradition of receiving their class rings. The ceremony included musical accompaniment from fellow classmates Afton Eichelman, Austin Lepri, Daniel Valentin-Morales, and a special performance from flautist Hannah Geerlings. Also included in the day’s events were words from Class President Aaron Hull, a poetry reading from Jennifer Foss, and a speech from Saint John’s President Dr. Jack Campbell, who challenged students to prepare themselves for the future problems of a complex and ever-changing world. Students then were announced one at a time to receive their rings and, with plenty of applause from parents and classmates, they officially became “upperclassmen.” Way to go, Class of 2011! |

| BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION On Wednesday, February 24, the Saint John’s school community held an assembly to celebrate Black History Month. The assembly was filled with song and dance presentations from our very talented students. Special guest, Mr. Tyrone Perry, Director of the Center for Student Diversity at Mount St. Mary’s University, spoke to the students and faculty. He stressed how everyone is affected by prejudice, ostracism, exclusivity, and that all of us have the power to be the change we want to see. Mr. Perry was responsible for the development of an innovative minority program, which was the first of its kind at Mount Saint Mary’s University. He managed the operations that included recruiting minority students from the inner city of Washington D.C, managing the budget, program marketing and development, and overseeing students’ academic progress, as well as other essential tasks that are involved in running a collegiate diversity program. It was a very informative and entertaining event. |
